Tuesday 23rd April saw the climax of the 2023/24 Indoor Season, as the Mens and Ladies Championship Singles finals took centre stage:
The Ladies final was a matchup between crowd favourite Sarah Decort, making her first appearance in the showpiece final, and 7-time and defending champion Sue Kemp, looking to break a tie with Penny Else in the all-time titles list. As things transpired, that wealth of experience counted for a lot in this match, with Sue making a strong start and never giving Sarah a look in, with Sue eventually running out a 21-4 winner. Another title for Sue, congratulations to her, and also to Sarah for an excellent season including the Pairs Championship title! After the match, Sue expressed her delight to retain the title for another year, she will now represent the Club in the National Champion of Champions Singles in 2024/25.
The Mens final saw the previous 2 winners doing battle - Ed Morris (2022/23 champion) against Mark Welton (2021/22 champion) - a mouthwatering contest on paper and it certainly didn't disappoint the large crowd in attendance. Ed started strongly collected a 4 and a 3 on route to a 10-1 early advantage, but Mark responded superbly and came all the way back to lead 18-17, as which point Ed managed to find some great bowls to claim the last few ends and run out 21-18 winner - a result which was in doubt right up until the last bowl had been played over 2.5 hours into the match, well played to both! This triumph is Ed's 6th title in the Richard Hart Singles and he will represent the Club in the National and County Champion of Champions Singles in 2024/25. Ed was delighted to have played his part in such a high-quality match, espcially in front of a great crowd of members.
Thus ends our 2023/24 competitive season - well done to all the Winners at every level of bowls and we hope you all have a great Summer!
