Bowls For Beginners Singles Competition
Played on 8th Feb, report below by John Warman....
BfB Single’s competition – Sunday 9th February.
This is an annual competition for new members with less than 12 months bowling experience.
Of the 24 attendees there were 16 men and 8 ladies, playing 3 disciplines each of 4 ends duration and using 3 bowls.
The first discipline was a variation on the 4-3-2-1 game but awarding 40-30-20-10 points respectively - maximum of 90 points possible.
Next came the Long/Short/Medium jack length, bowling 1 wood at each length – 10 points awarded to the nearest - maximum of 30 points possible.
Finally, a standard singles game but each scoring bowl earning 10 points i.e. only one player scoring on each end - maximum of 30 points possible.
Everyone seemed to enjoy the format, except the Long/Short/Medium jack - the majority of players finding that quite difficult, again!
After the 3 disciplines, the top 4 players had each amassed 360 points, namely: -
Gary Wakeling, Josh Golding, Joseph Lawrence and Sultan Taylor.
The play-offs were over 4 ends, scoring as in normal standard singles events.
Gary was victorious over Sultan and Joseph overcoming Josh.
In the final, Gary was triumphant, beating Joseph 6 – 2 scooping the Steve Kerley BfB Singles competition trophy, to be retained for a year!
Laura Robinson finished as best lady with 330 points, closely followed by Sue Trangmar (320) and Gill Larkins (310)
Many thanks to all the competitors for, not only turning up on time, but staying on to watch the finals and the presentation.
The atmosphere throughout the whole afternoon was brilliant, lots of laughter, banter and leg pulling!
Thanks also to Martin Bandelow, John Fry and Charlie Raffaelli who marked many games and to the volunteers from the playing contingent – well done.
Finally, and by no means last, thanks to Ev Schooling for manning the session desk, collating the scores, producing the cards and most importantly, organising the tea and biscuits.
Well done Gary.
