Club Competition Finals Days 1, 2 and 3
In Thursday night's Mens Club Championship Edward Morris played Michael Coulson. Edward stormed into an early lead of 10-2 after nine ends. However Michael dug in and got back to 14-11 after 21 ends. As darkness fell and the floodlights were switched on Edward regained the upper hand eventually winning 21-14 to retain the title.
In the other match Graham Evans played Matthew Osborne in the Mens' Intermediate Competition. Graham seemed to have the match in his grasp at 18-10 but Matthew moved up another gear in the gloom to win 20-21.
On Saturday Brenda Bowyer beat Sue Kemp in the Ladies Handicap. Sue started well, being 5-0 up after 3 ends. However, from that point on Brenda got her eye in and gained the lead on the 6th end never to look back. Brenda eventually won 21-13.
In the Ladies Championships it was the same two players with a similar result. This time Brenda didn't let Sue get a toehold in the event and was never behind. Brenda eventually won 21-11.
The Mens 2 Woods final produced a fascinating match contested by Kevin Watkins and Neil Jackson. Kevin took the early honours winning 7 of the first 9 ends and taking the lead by 8-4. From that point Neil came stormng back to be 16-12 up after 22 ends. It was now that Kevin found his form again and the match turned in his favour and which he won by 21-16.
The Mens Handicap was a tight affair between John Lloyd and Keith Vaughan who had a 1 shot start. Keith maintained his lead until the 16th end when John overtook him by 1. This stirred Keith who then won the next 3 ends to be 17-14 up and in sight of the finishing line. John then responded to win the next 3 ends by 6 shots and take the lead at 20-17. Keith made a final push winning the next 2 ends by 1 and 3 to win the encounter by 21-20.
The Mens Super Vets was contested by Bill Boys and Bernie Binstead. Bill took charge from the beginning and apart from a purple patch for Bernie, where he won 3 ends in succession by a total of 6 shots, Bill came out the winner by 21-14.
In the Ladies 4-3-2-1 Rosie Honey was up against Brenda Bowyer who was going for her 3rd victory. Rosie played well but couldn't hold Brenda who won by 102-78.
The Ladies 2 Woods final was between Sue Kemp and Kath Jarvis. After 18 ends it was close at 12-10 to Sue. From then onwards Sue didn't put a foot wrong and came out a 21-10 winner.
The Mens Vets was a tense affair. Chris Flack seemed in control at 9-0 and then 18-9 and within sight of the finishing line. Then Alan Whale went on a surge to be winning 20-19 only for Chris to get a 2 on the 23rd end to win the title.
In the Ladies Fixed Jack Brenda Bowyer won another trophy beating Cody, playing in her first final, 29-1.
The Mixed Pairs saw 4 different members into a final. The match took a long time to conclude with Richard and Margaret Shillito beating Louise Lu and Tony Cording by 25-16.
In the Mens 4-3-2-1 Phil Bowyer beat David Dar by 108-92.
In the Mabbs Roy Rowney never got going and was beaten by Tony Jacks 21-5.
The Mens Fixed Jack saw Neil Jackson get some recompense from his defeat in the 2 Woods by beating John Lloyd by 21-15.
On Sunday the Ladies Pairs was running slowly and the skies became very black for the last 2 ends. So in the rain Margaret Shillito and Brenda Bowyer pulled out all the stops to win the last 5 ends by 9 and overturn a deficit into a 23-16 victory.
The Mens Pairs saw two finalists who had already appeared this year. Keith Vaughan, partnered by Geoff Stanford and Bill Boys, partnered by Eddie Robinson played a game that neither team could take a firm hold on. Bill's team won the first 5 ends followed by Keith winning the next 7 ends. Bill then won 5 ends without reply at which point it was 18-17 to Keith who consoidated the game in the next 3 ends. The final result was 23-19 to Keith and Geoff.
The Late Summer Pairs was contested bt Chris Watson and Tony Cording playing against Richard Spriggs and Phil Bowyer. This was played as the best of 5 sets. Spriggs and Bowyer won the first but Watson and Cording won the next 3 to take the title.
The final match of the weekend wasn't a club match. It was the Ashby Cup played for by all Group 6 club winners and runners-up. This resulted in Essex County's 2 players reaching the final where Kevin Watkins defeated Edward Morris by 21-15.
